Inspiration behind the brand: SARRU

Inspiration behind the brand: SARRU

SARRU create unique, salvaged and upcycled furniture across bedroom, dining and outdoor plus beautiful lighting and soft furnishings. ufurnish.com Co-Founder and CEO, Deirdre McGettrick, sat down virtually with Jane and Steve Mosley, Directors at SARRU to learn more about the inspiration behind their brand.

Q1. SARRU has a beautiful and sustainable range of products so it would be great to learn why salvaged and upcycled furniture is the direction you chose? Also, ufurnish.com followers would love to understand, where did the name SARRU come from?

We live in a world with finite natural resources and their scarcity is a hot topic now. Savvy consumers have had enough of fast fashion and throwaway consumerism, and are looking for an alternative. After a boom of cheap flat pack furnishings and cookie cutter interiors, people also want their interiors to reflect their lives and personalities.

Antique furniture was made to last, out of sturdy natural materials. Years of love have given each piece a unique character, so we are enthusiastic about the use of salvaged, reclaimed and recycled materials.
This also helps to stop these materials being sent to landfill and going to waste.

The name was easy; we just took the first letter from our 5 fundamentals- Salvaged. Artisan. Reclaimed. Recycled. Upcycled – SARRU

Q2.   It’s clear that sustainability and being eco-friendly is a core value to you at SARRU. What type of interesting materials have you salvaged to create your pieces?

We visit the scrap yards of the world to salvage discarded items, broken vehicles and demolished buildings. Some of the materials we find are amazing and they make very interesting furniture and accessories. We then work with craftsmen to give these items a new lease of life.
Some interesting items we use are railway sleepers, truck beds, antique teak doors, clutch plates - the list is endless!

Q3. You produce an amazing range of stunning products which we know you design yourself, what do you think people will love most about the products you offer?

People love our products because they are trying to live a more sustainable eco-friendly life, and they want their home to reflect their personality. With our salvaged and reclaimed ranges every single item is completely unique, and you can be sure that no one else will have the same as you!
We also have such a wide range of styles to offer, from Boho to Steampunk, you’re bound to find something to inspire.

Q4. If someone is looking to furnish their home, are there any tips or suggestions that you could offer them?

Follow your instincts and don’t be afraid to make a statement!
It’s always a good idea to start with a colour palette or mood board, so that each individual piece you add to a room will fit within your scheme. Mixing different textures and colours can add depth and layers of interest to your room.

Our products are unique, one of a kind handcrafted pieces that often tell a story. Find a statement piece or mix it all to make an imaginative urban chic statement.

Q5. What does the next 12 months look like for SARRU?

Hopefully when it is safe to do so we will be travelling back to our far flung scrap yards to find more inspiration. We will be meeting up with the talented craftsmen who bring our designs to life and planning new collections. Creating great pieces from pre-loved materials is where our passion lies.
