Bird Accessories

While many of us like to use our garden as our own personal space for relaxation and soaking up some sun, there are others who choose to see their garden as their very own wildlife and bird sanctuary, doing all they can to attract birds into the garden – and deter other creatures from stealing the food they leave out to encourage active bird life.

Examples of bird accessories

One of the most obvious bird accessories designed to entice and attract all manner of different birds is the bird feeder, typically hung from a tree and filled with nuts of bird feed in order to allow birds to feed – while the user looks on and enjoys the concept of birds feeding in their garden. We tend to find that bird lovers hang their feeders on trees which are situated outside of a window, though for those who don’t have trees outside any of their windows there are also feeders which can be mounted on walls and on surfaces. The main thing to note is to make sure the feeder is installed high enough away from the ground that any cat or other predator can’t get to the birds while they are eating.

Another common example of a popular bird accessory for the garden is a bird box – designed to provide nesting birds with an optimum place to set themselves up, sit on their eggs and ultimately raise and feed their babies from. These kinds of accessories are super important to bird conservation and so should be installed with care – making sure to keep them away from predators up high under drainpipes or on the side of a house or barn. Birds like darker spaces when they nest, so a box with a hole in the front will be an ideal safe place – though it is worth checking the size of the hole and which birds the box you buy is designed for, just in case it isn’t the right size for those birds you regularly get in your garden.

Other accessories include bird baths – particularly important in winter and summer when there is less water available for birds to feed on in streams and ponds – and of course the right selection of food for the birds in your garden. Typically a standard wild bird seed will do the trick, although a little extra research may help you narrow down the exact type of food that your visitors would like.

Accessories for those who don’t want to encourage birds

This doesn’t necessarily refer to those who dislike birds – although there are certain accessories which are designed to simply move birds on and stop them from landing on an individual home or fence line, for example bird spikes which users can mount at the top of a rooftop or fence to stop birds from landing there and making a mess on their home.

For the most part however, these kinds of accessories are purchased by cat owners for example, who don’t want to see birds in their garden becoming subject to cat attacks. These kinds of accessories include windmills and chimes hung in trees which put birds off landing in the trees or even coming near them – with the whirring action of the spinning elements scaring them into flying away.

For the best selection of bird accessories which are high in quality, safe for wildlife to use and aesthetically pleasing for your garden, head to garden centres and pet stores.
