Hall Trees

When it comes to creating a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing hallway, it is important to hit the right balance between creating a space that you love, and one that will introduce guests and visitors to the very essence of your home. The hallway is the portal to the rest of the home, providing the first glimpse of your chosen decorative style, and serving as a welcoming entry spot.

The challenge in decorating a hall is in finding the right way to provide coat hooks and shoe storage without creating clutter and ensuring that the space is private and welcoming but still filled with natural light and outdoor influences. Enter the hall tree.

What is a hall tree?

Designed as an item which provides all the practicality of a coat hook but blended into one tall structure, hall trees boast sturdy structures and innovative designs – hanging a series of hooks off of the main body of the tree in order to allow for coats, hats and other items to be hung up. The hall tree often means keeping these items on display, and yet by piling them atop each other with the multi layered hook design, the space filled by even the fullest of hall trees is minimal when compared with, for example, a strip of coat hooks.

That’s not to say that all the designs are the same, with some bulking the main body of the hall tree out further so that it includes a bench and multiple strips of hooks. While some are standalone and can be set apart from the wall, others come with built back panels and even walls, containing the storage within a small area and allowing for the hall tree to be popped into a corner out of the way.

Things to consider when you look for a hall tree

The first thing to consider is how large your hallway is and whether you would benefit rom a 360 round coat storage solution, or where you would be better off with one of the bench panel designs that focuses more on maximising coat hook space through width. If your hallway boasts a fairly small surface area, or if you want to ensure that you don’t create an overpowering visual eyesore that will impact the flow of natural light, then the traditional hall tree is probably not for you – with the bench trees providing more of a straight line and modern structure to suit your space.

If however you benefit from a larger space, the traditional hall tree is not just interesting to look at but also provides some element of whimsy – giving guests and visitors something to comment on when they arrive at your home, and introducing them to the visual concepts you have included in your decorating.

Other things to consider include the weight of the coats being hung and ensuring that the hall tree’s structure is strong and stable enough to withstand the weight of multiple coats, as well as the height of the hall tree and whether its location will impact the opening of any doors or cupboards. You will be amazed at how a few coats soon bulks the design of the thin hall tree right out – so be sure to understand the space you have available first.

Hall trees can be found in homeware accessory and furniture stores, with some of the best and most structurally sound designs being made from wood or metal, with weighted bases.
