Important information - This listing is for the print only; it does not include a mount or frame - Your print will be protected by a sheet of greyboard & packaged in a compostable sleeve - A4 (21.0 x 29.7cm) The Humboldt penguin's conservation story Like most penguins, the Humboldt penguin doesn't hang out on icebergs in the South Pole and, in fact, prefers the warmer climes of Peru & Chile. There are eighteen species of penguin, & only two of those live in Antarctica - who knew?! Humboldt populations are declining. Overfishing has made it difficult for them to find enough food, the penguins are killed for their skin & blubber, & they are taken from the wild for the pet trade. People even want to steal their poop, which you wouldn't think would be a problem - & for most species probably wouldn't be - but the Humboldt's poop, mixed in with other bird & seal poop, creates a substrate that the penguins use to build their nests. Unfortunately it is also a great fertiliser. To help prevent over-harvesting of guano (a nicer name for the poop concoction), organisations are protecting important parts of the Humboldt's habitat & working with harvesters to ration the amount of guano they take for their crops. in some locations, penguins have also been given artificial nest boxes, which has helped to reduce the number of abandoned nests. Plant a tree For every wildlife art print sold, a tree will be planted in the Albertine Rift forests of Uganda as part of a wildlife habitat restoration project in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute.
