Trailing North - Chuck Wagon Detail Sold For Judy

This piece is an homage to that quintessential knight of the American West, the Cowboy. I call it Trailing North. After the Civil War, there was little money & no market for beef in Texas. The enterprising cattle barrens decided, if there was no market for their product in Texas, they would take their product to where there was one. That would be North. They devised a plan to gather great herds & drive (walk) them to the money. These drives took many different routes & often took three months. Ten to twelve men would require a lot of material to support this undertaking. All of that material (importantly, all that was needed to prepare the grub), was carried in a reconfigured Army wagon. This iconic wagon came to be called a Chuck Wagon. Famous cattle baron Charles Goodnight is credited with its conception & design. There were many variations on the theme, but all contained the same basic components. It was absolutely essential to the effort.
