"Fran Miller "

'Fran Miller is one of only very few women in the world making a living from surf photography. Local to Kirra & a passionate advocate for the Gold Coast, Fran braves consequencial waves to capture the abstract dynamics of surfers & their natural environment. Fran concentrates on exploring female surfers & the emotion of their expression in the water. Her dedication, passion & success as an artist are inspiration to women in every field. The posture was chosen by Fran & represents a daily practice of hers in the water of facing down & connecting to the felt presence of the ocean. Frans bravery & spiritual connection with the water, formed a framework of meaning during the making of this piece. Within the sculpting process I focused on the physicality of her bravery through the relaxed strength of her body on the board & its sentience with the ocean. in the finishing I used a watery green pattina to explore the exchange in this relationship. I cut back into the metal before waxing it to highlight the scars on her body from her hours of hard kicking & close calls with the reef. I hope that this classically inspired contemporary souvenir casts into longevity, the gravity & power of her life & the inspiration she provides for women locally & internationally.'
