With this in mind we put emphasis on showing the character not only based on the rarely available pictures showing him in younger years but also on the contemporary busts & portait paintings in his older years. It was very important for us to show the seriousness & maturity in his facial expression, which has some sort of direct link to his achievement as one of the most important philosophers of the 19th century. Equally, we were interested in Nietzsche as person. Throughout his life he was ravaged by desease & finally died with 55 years. This contrasts to his partially radical life-affirming considerations & his untiring striving for new perspectives for human thought & activity. Anyhow, his whole life & all his thoughts were characterized by a great versatility & partially contradictory nature. Not least by this fact the tremendous importance of his work up to the present time is explained. It might seem impossible to combine all this in the face of one bust. But the attempt must be made.
