This striking ceramic lamp translates one of architecture's most powerful buildings into functional art. Inspired by Louis Kahn's National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Parliament C captures the geometric openings that define the structure's peripheral volumes. The Architecture: Kahn's Bangladesh Parliament features eight monumental blocks surrounding the central assembly hall, each punctured with dramatic geometric openings. This lamp directly references those architectural forms - the triangular & circular voids that Kahn used to create passages for light & air while maintaining massive structural presence. The Making: Beginning as a slip-cast ceramic block, I carefully cut the openings while the clay is still workable, recreating Kahn's essential principle: punctures in mass that serve both structure & spirit. After bisque firing, the piece is glazed to emphasize the relationship between solid walls & empty space. When illuminated, the openings reveal their true purpose - transforming the lamp into a meditation on what Kahn understood profoundly: architecture's highest achievement is the choreography of light itself. Display: The lamp works equally well lit or unlit - as functional lighting that transforms evening spaces, or as a sculptural object that brings architectural gravitas to your interior.
