Description

Intricately carved reproduction of one of numerous animal representations from imensly important Book of Kells. The illustrations & ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance & complexity. The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with the ornate swirling motifs typical of Insular art. Figures of humans, animals & mythical beasts, together with Celtic knots & interlacing patterns in vibrant colours, enliven the manuscript's pages. Many of these minor decorative elements are imbued with Christian symbolism & so further emphasise the themes of the major illustrations. This item has been hand carved, stained with a non-toxic stain, hand sanded to make the dogs stand out & then coated in protective oils.
