Built in 1839, the Carthage Jail was built to hold minor criminals, such as thieves & those in debt. The first floor had rooms for the Jailor as well as his family while the second floor held a cell for those accused. While being held on charges relating to his ordering of the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor in 1844 a mob stormed the Jail & murdered Joseph Smith, leader of the Mormon religion & his brother Hyrum, as well as injuring others who were being held with them. This model was based on both current & historical images & known dimensions of the jail.
