Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell (1943 - present) is an astrophysicist from Northern Ireland. As a post-graduate student, she discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967 & this is considered one of the most significant scientific achievements of the 20th Century. The Nobel Prize was awarded to her thesis supervisor & another astronomer. Burnell was excluded from the award despite being the first to observe & analyse the pulsars. Today, we celebrate women scientists who are intelligent, hard working, & leaders in their field.
