Perched dramatically on the acropolis of ancient Tibur, overlooking the falls of the Aniene & a sweeping rocky gorge, the circular temple at Tivoli is one of the most evocative survivals of the Roman world. Dating to the early 1st century BC & built in a refined variant of the Corinthian order, its slender columns, richly carved capitals & circular cella raised on a high travertine podium have made it one of the most studied & admired monuments of antiquity. Of its original eighteen Corinthian columns ten remain standing today, their survival across two thousand years lending the ruin an atmosphere of remarkable poignancy. The identity of the deity to whom the temple was dedicated remains one of archaeology's enduring mysteries. Candidates range from Hercules, the protecting god of Tibur, to the Tiburtine Sibyl Albunea, to Vesta herself, to Tiburnus the eponymous hero of the city. The inscription on the architrave records only the name of its builder or restorer, Lucius Gellius, leaving the question of dedication tantalizingly unresolved.
