This symbol is made of two interwoven symbols: The circle, which is universal, & a four-cornered Celtic Knot drawn in one continuous line. The circle is an ancient symbol used to represent an almost endless number of concepts: the sun, earth, moon, God, eternity, perfection, totality, the continuity of life, heaven, protection, & the universe. The four-cornered Celtic knot represents, among other things, the four main Gaelic seasonal festivals; Four Druidic gods who each rule a quadrant of the earth; Good luck, as in a four-leaf clover; The four elements: Earth, Wind, Fire & Water; The four seasons; North, South, East & West. VARIATIONS OF MEANING: With the many meanings of both the circle & four-corner knot, this composite symbol has multiple meanings. COMPASS ROSE: The Compass Rose of a map shows the four directions, highlighted so that sailors could read it under the stars. Circles often represent completion. Eternity knots forming a Compass Rose with the circle woven thru, evoke the cycle of Exploration & Returning Home. WITCH'S KNOT: A Witch's Knot represents the 'knot magic' that was practiced by witches in the Middle Ages. For example, a protective witch's knot similar to this was often scratched over doorways to keep away negative energy. SIZES: This listing includes size variations. The standard carving is approximately 11 inches tip to tip both wide & tall. The miniature version about 5.5 inches in both directions. We display the miniatures with eye screws. This design could be hung on a brad nail without an eye screw. If you would rather not have an eye screw, we will probably have to make it specifically for you. There are options under the Select a Size dropdown menu. If you require different sizes, we can accommodate with limitations. The Standard size is as large as we can get from one board, anything from an 11 inch diameter down to 6 inch would fall under the standard size pricing. On the Miniature variation, we may be able to go a little smaller but not much (any smaller & the little holes are too little). Please check with us if you have a specific size you are interested in. THE CARVING: Our carvings are single pieces of western red cedar, designed & carved to be wall hangings. Each carving begins as a 1 X 12-inch cedar board. While we use power tools (Scroll Saw, Rotary shaft Tool, handheld detail sanders, etc.), we use no lasers, CNC machines or computer-operated cutting machines. All work is done with our hands & eyes... We cut the 2-dimensional blanks with scroll & jig saws (double-sized custom orders have to be cut with a jigsaw). Carving is done with rotary shaft tools & disc grinders. The 80-grit sanding is the final phase of the carving process, removing the nicks & gouges from the carving tools, & finishes the shaping of the weave. The next 2 sandings with 120 & then 220 grit finishes the smoothing & polishing. They are finished with Clear Danish Oil to seal the piece, bringing out the grain & the color.
