Hand Carved Svetovid Idol, Slavic Pagan Amulet, Museum Copy

Medieval style hand carved amulet with Svetovid, Svantovit or Sventovit. Svetovid was a Slavic deity of war, fertility & abundance primarily venerated on the island of Rgen into the 12th century. He is often considered a local Rugian variant of the pan-Slavic god Perun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svetovid). The most famous idol of Svetovid was found in our country - Ukraine. It is wellknown as Zbruch Idol (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zbruch_Idol). The design & construction of this product exactly repeat the medieval prototype (see the last photo). The idol was found during excavation in Wolin, Pomerania (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolin). One of four Svetovid wood figures from 9th or 10th century used for home worship in Wolin. Wolin was a large early medieval trade & craft center on the Baltic Sea. The period of greatest development during the medieval period occurred between the 9th & the 11th centuries. Around 896 AD a new port was constructed & the main part of the town acquired new, stronger fortifications, including a wooden palisade made of halved 50 centimeter wide tree trunks, a rampart & a retaining wall. The color of the product may differ slightly from that shown in the photo. The item is impregnated with natural toning fluid based on vegetable components & with natural oils & is covered with natural beeswax (without varnish).
