Blue Jays make a large variety of calls that carry long distances. Most calls produced while the jay is perched within a tree. Usually flies across open areas silently, especially during migration. Stuffs food items in throat pouch to cache elsewhere; when eating, holds a seed or nut in feet & pecks it open. One of the loudest & most colorful birds of eastern back yards & woodlots, the Blue Jay is unmistakable. Intelligent & adaptable, it may feed on almost anything, & it is quick to take advantage of bird feeders. Besides their raucous jay! jay! calls, Blue Jays make a variety of musical sounds, & they can do a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. They slip furtively through the trees when tending their own nest or going to rob the nest of another bird. This is one of my favorite carvings because of its bright color pattern.
