Hand-Carved Northern Flicker Feather Suspended By Young Buckthorn Plant

This one-of-a-kind northern flicker feather is hand carved from tupelo wood until paper thin & wood burned with incredible detail for realistic texture. It is then intricately painted & carefully suspended in the air by grasses made from copper over a locally-sourced, live-edge, burled walnut base. As an artist, I wanted the piece to have the appearance that the feather fell from the sky & rested in the habitat in a natural composition. Process details: - Extreme attention to details: created to be 100% realistic in every aspect - Carved paper thin of tupelo wood. Light could be seen through the wood fibers before it was painted. - Sanded with auto body grade sandpaper to peak smoothness. - Each feather barb was carefully wood burned under a magnifying glass for realistic texture. - Detailed feather markings are painted in multiple layers with high end, fine art oil paint. - Burled walnut base is locally sourced & is custom cut to accent the visual movement of the feather & habitat. For example: representing spirituality, symbolizing wisdom, denoting membership, expressing devotion, acknowledging a friendship, recognizing an accomplishment or as a gesture of love. About the artist: My passion for birds & for art runs deep. I spend hours studying with falconers & observing birds so my work is accurate & inspired. I love the challenge of the various mediums I work with: wood, metal, paper, clay, & oil paint. My mentality, no matter what art project I am working on, is to create competition quality pieces & to never settle for less.
