The mimics are believed to be the result of an alchemist's attempt to create an inanimate object through the application of a mystical reagent, whose formula has been lost. Over the years, these strange but intelligent creatures have learned the ability to turn into simulacra of manufactured objects. A mimic can take the generic form of any object of similar size, such as a large crate, a sturdy bed, or a door. Although the mimics are not inherently evil, some essays suggest that they attack men & other intelligent creatures more for pastime than to feed themselves. The desire to deceive others is part of their being, & their surprise attacks represent the culmination of this desire.
