New Life To An Antique Child's Rocking Chair

Want an unusual accent piece or conversation starter?. This cowhide rocker may be just the thing. We recently found this antique child's rocking chair in an antique store. The cloth upholstery was worn & tattered but the base seemed sound. We took it home to see if we could breathe new life into it by reupholstering the chair in natural, hair on cowhide. When we took the old upholstery off, we discovered that the chair was made by the Marietta Chair Company, located in Marietta, Ohio. The company was established in 1856. in researching the company, we were not able to find any reference after 1912. While we are not antique experts, we think the chair was made sometime around the turn of the 20th century. When we reupholster antiques, we do not attempt to restore the bases. We leave the dings, bruises & blemishes as we find them. This base is old & shows some signs of use. We tightened as much assembly hardware as we could. The seat was soft & cracked, as you can see from the label photo so we sistered the seat with a supporting piece of wood. We left the label on the chair but to give it a finished look, we covered the bottom with a piece of cowhide leather so it is not visible. The padding was replaced with I foam, & we re-used the original exterior screws & bolts. Measuring 17 wide x 24 deep x 22 high, she'll make a wonderful addition to your home.
