One of mine was never far from a bubbling pot & a wooden spoon; the other, from the keys of her piano & the comforting crackle of the BBC World Service. From their aprons spill recipes & remedies, from their lips come tales that stretch across generations. They teach without teachingpassing on a quiet strength, a rootedness, a way of being in the world that honours slowness & care. These small sculptures are a tribute to the Yia Yias of Greece, often seen in dark clothing, worn not in sorrow but in remembrancehonouring the dead as they continue nurturing the living. They sit in pairs or trios, gossiping, stitching, shelling peas, watching over their families like sentinels of continuity. in many cultures, elders are reverednot only for their wisdom, but for the invisible thread they hold between past & present. in a world that spins faster by the day, may we not forget them.
