Let's travel back in time, or bring it to life again now, like the series of Jurassic films. We can handpick our favorite dinos, shrink them down (now that would be a cool invention), & display those lucky chosen few. & then we'd just hope that they wouldn't creep into the bedroom & start displaying their carnivorous tendencies in the middle of the night. & just imagine being a scuba diver & caught while in the deep...? Gives me the shivers just to think about it. Jason Sailer's original clay sculpture Mosasaur measures 11 high x 19 long x 9 deep, & weighs in at 12 lbs. The scuba diver is 8 x 6 x 8, a paltry 1 lb. in comparison to the original Terror of the Deep. The two are separate, & can be repositioned at will. Made with additive, modeling & subtractive techniques, using our favorite RL6 red earthenware. Once-fired in our studio kiln, these sculptures were finished with progressive glazes of acrylic paint & sealed with a polymer coating. The sculptures were created as an example for a series of art classes we taught on deep sea monsters. It was a great opportunity to teach about scale - how big (or small) one object is in relation to another. . Just look at the variety of textures found in the two sculptures is fascinating, from the coral on the base to the mosasaur's hide to the cloth, skin & metal on the diver. Check out those teeth!
