Not recommended for outdoor display. History of the sculpture Roman version of an idealized portrait of the mythical character, Alexander the Great. It was made during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, coinciding with the expansion of Italica, a period when the city reached its peak. The head is carved from Paros marble, & it is worth noting the feminization of this portrait, typical of Hadrian's era, when tastes were markedly Hellenistic.
