Fawn Fernfadden: Portraits drawn from Chefterton's Guide to the Misunderstood: From the Preface: Be it so foreacknowledged that the present volumes, with their constituent parts & addenda can be none other than as a drop within the ocean of time & space so demanded by the exigent worthiness of such an undertaking. Wherein, these few examples as must exist between our brethren & we, the observers of the same, must take heart of the facts presented, not without difficulty, but with steadfast adherance to the way, knowing that that which can be resolved within the mind must inevitably come to nothing, & only through a compassionating trust in matters of the heart can we hope to find ourselves within the unknown mystery of each other. Abel Soothsay Chefterton The only known copy of this rare work, an original manuscript comprising numerous large volumes & ancillary notebooks, with an extensive collection of ephemera relating to the individual subjects, has been for many years in the hands of an irresponsible artist known for various forms of odd behaviour, it having been bequeathed to him by the author, taken with delirium upon his deathbed. These terra cotta portraits inspired by Chefterton's monumental effort are the work of that artist, known to some as Joseph Blue Sky. Fawn Fernfadden The people of Piddelly, in the west part of Southeastern Llewenblygg, Wales, credit the unremitting tastefulness of the Garden Square in the village of Glyddfelden to the quiet perseverance of the Fernfaddens, & in particular, the eldest sister, Fawn. Tall, soft-spoken, & impeccably dressed, her presence was a steady comfort to the people of the village, who counted on her in all manner of civic occupations, for an unfailing example of good faith in moral decency & uncommon politeness. She could calm the storm of any contentious meeting at the Dewey Bottom by the occasion of a well placed clearing of the throat, followed by a pleasant change of subject. Her interest in every aspect of village life & in particular, the Garden Square, with its long heritage, was well known & held in the highest regard by all of the nicest people in the area. Her long life was marked by a strict adherence to form of the most proper sort. She never married. No blemish of any kind ever marred her character. There were rumors, but the good people of Piddelly chose not to speak of them. ASC Fawn Fernfadden
