Francois-Marie Arouet (21 November 1694 - 30 may 1778) known by his nom de plume Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, & philosopher. Voltaire was a versatile writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poems, novels, essays, & historical & scientific works. He wrote more than 20,000 letters & more than 2,000 books & pamphlets. This bust was made by Jean Antoine Houdon who modeled Voltaire's portrait shortly after the celebrated exile's triumphant return to Paris in early 1778, a few months before his death. Immortalizing the aged Voltaire's physical frailty & sardonic expression, the bust was widely acclaimed as the closest likeness ever made of him. Crowds thronged Houdon's studio to view the work & the entrepreneurial sculptor soon began to produce the portrait in a variety of formats (different hairstyles & dress) & a wide range of materials (marble, bronze, plaster & terracotta). This reproduction is carved from a solid block of the finest Greek marble. Our marble is white with occasional veins of different colorations. For this reason every sculpture is unique. & don't forget, marble lasts forever. Dimensions : Height 15 cm (5.9 inches) Diameter 7 cm (2.75 inches) Weight 0,8 Kg Will ship worldwide.
