Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher as well as the founder of the school of philosophy called Epicureanism. Only a few fragments & letters of Epicurus's 300 written works remain. Metrodorus of Lampsacus (331/0-278/7 BC) was a Greek philosopher & disciple of Epicurus. This sculpture is a copy of a Hermes-type bust (pillar with the top as a sculpted head) of Epicurus leaned with his back against Metrodorus. It was made with Pentelic marble during the Roman Imperial Era (2nd-half of the 2nd century AD), & was found in Rome, Italy. The original sculpture is now located at the Louvre in Paris. This reproduction is carved from a solid block of the finest Greek marble. Our marble is white with occasional veins of different colorations.
