Asclepius was the god of medicine, who was worshiped throughout the Greek world in antiquity. The rod of Asclepius, a snake-entwined staff, remains a symbol of medicine today. The original sculpture, from the first quarter of the 2nd century B.C., is Roman, after a Greek original by Phyromachos. It is now located at the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.
