Over the coming months, Stacey will be taking us through the trending interior styles, how to get our homes ready for autumn and all things Christmas. This month, Stacey discusses the top 5 autumn interior trends dominating homes this year and how you can achieve them.

As summer draws to a close and the evenings start to get dark earlier it's almost time to store the paddling pool and sun loungers, pack the garden furniture away and retreat indoors out of the elements. While some of us seek to desperately extend those summer months in our homes and gardens, the rest of us will be excitedly preparing for the changing of the seasons and transitioning our homes for the colder months ahead.

Maybe we’re looking at ways to create a cosy living room, examining the best lighting ideas to brighten up the dark evenings ahead or even seeking out top tips for preparing our homes to receive guests this Christmas.

Whether you are a fan of autumn or not, the new season does bring with it a renewed curiosity about the autumn interior trends that we shall be seeing in 2022. How will they be showing up this autumn and how can we incorporate them into our own homes for maximum impact?

We've identified five strong autumn interior trends for 2022 so let's take a deeper look at what they are and how to recreate them.

1. Comforting colours

I don't know about you, but autumn conjures up all kinds of cosy and comforting feelings for me. I am a big fan of the Danish concept of hygge which is all about cosiness, comfortable conviviality and contentment.

And colours can play a large part in making our homes feel comfortable. This autumn we will be seeing lots of warm and earthy colours making their way into our homes. Think terracotta, mustard yellow and burnt umber and orange. The colours of the seventies are calling, and they are coming to a home near you!

And if that isn't enough to get you excited, we'll be seeing an appearance by chocolate brown which has walked straight off the catwalk of 2021 and is heading for our homes this autumn.

Adding a sense of warmth and making us all feel much more grounded in these times of turmoil, chocolate brown will be accompanied by shades of camel, caramel, and cognac.

This deep, rich and earthy colour palette will be making an appearance in furniture, wall coverings and flooring but expect to see it showing up on accessories, soft furnishings and artwork too.

Are you ready to welcome comforting colours as one of the biggest Autumn interior trends for 2022?

2. Seventies shapes

But it's not just the seventies colours that are getting a throwback. We will also be seeing seventies shapes making an appearance. Forget boxy, angular furniture. This season it's all about those captivating curves, from sinuous sofas and circular coffee tables to arched accessories, this autumn it's all about furniture that feels good and is easy on the eye.

The pandemic had us all looking for refuge, wanting to cocoon ourselves safely away and this new generation of curved furniture feels cosier and more protective. Scientific studies have proven that the human brain has a propensity for curves as they prompt significantly more brain activity than sharp angular shapes in interiors. Scientists believe this may be down to the fact that curves are more organic and more often found in nature, so we have a natural affinity to them.

So, when you are updating your home with the autumn interior trends for 2022, bear this in mind and opt instead for curved furniture to create a sense of ease and flow in your interiors. Whilst curved furniture takes its cue from the seventies, it also injects a fresh and contemporary feel to the space. What is not to love?

3. Playful patterns

Playful patterns are having their moment and the checkerboard trend is high up on the list of Pinterest's trend predictions for 2022. From soft and subtle gingham checks to bold and bright checkerboard and patchwork patterns, this trend is making its way from fashion and beauty straight into our homes.

Stripes, checks and patchwork are nothing new of course but the autumn interior trends for 2022 see them brighter and bolder than we're used to. Taking this timeless design and giving it a new lease on life, it will appeal to younger generations who would normally steer clear of traditional patterns.

There’s always a place for favourites such as checks, but this year, instead of monochrome you’ll see them in a brighter palette. They will mainly be appearing on home accessories such as carpets, rugs and cushions but watch this space to see how designers push the boundaries with these playful patterns.

4. Tactile textiles and textures

Texture has always been one of the main ingredients in great interior design, however, this season tactile textiles and textures are set to take centre stage when it comes to autumn interior trends for 2022. Look out for textured corduroy upholstery, quilted soft furnishings, and shaggy or fringed accessories. And not forgetting bouclé which is still going strong into the autumn/winter season as these tactile materials provide us with casual comfort at home.

It's not just soft furnishings where texture is making an appearance. We are also seeing texture in furniture and accessories too with more raw and natural materials featuring in interiors. Wood, stone, rattan, seagrass, terracotta, clay, and cork are all gaining in popularity this year.

Tactile textures may be yet another throwback to the seventies or it could just be a consequence of the pandemic which prevented us all from touching surfaces and people for a good part of two years and resulted in our longing to bring more tactile experiences into our homes. Whatever the reason, texture is back and here to stay.

5. Lavish lighting

As we prepare to turn the clocks back at the end of October, there is a renewed interest in lighting as we all seek to illuminate our homes on the dark and gloomy winter evenings. But as we look at the autumn interior trends for 2022, we can see that merely functional lighting is giving way to elegant and extravagant lighting.

This season your lights should be the design focal point of the room so choose oversized statement ceiling and pendant lights that will get noticed. Don't shy away from choosing something weird and wonderful that will be the talking point when guests come round.

The same goes for table lamps as we seek to illuminate those dark corners. This season is all about sculptural shapes and interesting textures. Think of your lights as works of art in their own right and you can’t go far wrong.
