Decorating a child’s bedroom often leads to a bit of a conundrum – we want to create a magical space for our little ones where they can sleep soundly, but it also needs to be practical and secure. There is so much to consider, from colour schemes to storage options and how best to manage those early summer mornings! Whatever theme you might be considering for children’s bedroom ideas or nursery décor, be inspired by our incredible uFurnish.com Home Awards entrants’ wonderful designs.

We had such a range of fantastic children’s bedroom entries this year that it was really hard to choose the finalists, never mind our eventual winner! Kerry Davison (@houseofchi) triumphed with this calming colour palette for a room that is clearly a child’s room but exudes chic. The oversized pom poms on the bedspread are a lovely touch, as are the practical panelling and bookcases and child-sized chair – this must be a lovely place that you would WANT to go to bed in!

Another of our finalists, Emily Smith (@coloursofnumberone), used this gorgeous calming wallpaper offset by bright curtains and vibrantly coloured toys to provide pops of colour and stimulus for a young baby. Practicality is built into the design with the nursing chair next to the crib and the room makes the best use of the available light.

Our next finalist, Nicole Roberts (@my_persimmon_home), has used a riot of bright colours and patterns to brilliant effect in this jungle-themed boy’s room with lots going on and plenty to stimulate. However, practicality has not been forgotten with the built-in desk and storage for all those toys. The lovely mural on the walls and paint detail around the window add a clever twist, as does all the texture.

Frederique Pope (@interiorswithattitude) also went for a jungle theme in this adventure playground design – surely you wouldn’t have any trouble persuading the offspring to get to bed! There is a hammock and a den as well as the treehouse bed and grass-like flooring… all making an unforgettable childhood room.

Our last finalist, Sarah Finlay (@edwardianbytheseaside), has created this super uncluttered look for a girl’s room with calming dark green on the walls and a lovely canopied bed, making for a very inviting sleeping space. The cosy carpet on the floor and clever shutters and curtains for flexibility and light control through the seasons make for a serene and quite grown-up space. Bright artwork and soft furnishings, such as cushions and throws, offset the wall colour to create a lovely, unfussy room.

Styles seen across Entrants' Rooms

We saw plenty of use of bright colours across many of the entries, unsurprising given the importance of visual stimulus for babies and children. However, some of the entrants used much more muted tones to fantastic effect, creating warm, inviting spaces. Practicality was also a key theme given the need for sensible toy and book storage in what can sometimes be smaller spaces. The thread throughout all these creations – however fantastical or practicable – was the child’s personality, as, let’s face it, the little ones are all individuals and their bedrooms need to reflect that.

What we love at uFurnish.com

We loved the variety seen across all the entries – some designs undoubtedly quirky, but others taking more traditional approaches. Fun solutions to practical dilemmas, such as this wonderful bus bunk bed, can provide an eye-catching centrepiece. Whatever the design, it was clear all the entrants had worked hard to provide a wonderful environment for their child, which was amazing.

How to apply these ideas in your home

When starting your design journey for your child’s room, regardless of how large or small your budget is, the theme is key. What makes your child tick? Are they a dinosaur fan, horse-mad, longing to live in a jungle, castle or under the sea? Once you have a good idea of this, assess the size of the room and then think about the practicalities:

1. Single or shared room:
- If the room is for one child, you can perhaps be more indulgent of their desired theme.
- If the room is to be shared, there will be some compromise, such as marrying two themes together or incorporating practical solutions such as bunk beds or study areas.
- Sleepovers require extra, albeit temporary, bed space – think how this might be incorporated.

2. Lighting:
- Early morning light is a theme of summertime, so make sure you build in flexibility for window coverings. Blackout blinds and curtains can be a real benefit.
- Flexible lighting, including both ceiling lights and table lamps, is a great idea.
- Does your child need a nightlight?

3. Storage requirements:
- Toys and books can take up a lot of room, so think about storage.
- Shelving is key and can fit into all sorts of spaces.
- Toy boxes are really useful and could be incorporated into the theme.

4. Artwork & mirrors:
- Wall art is essential in a child’s room, either to echo the theme or provide colour contrasts.
- Mirrors can add light to a child’s room but do need to be safe in case of boisterous play!

A child’s room does need to fulfil practical functions but should also be something they will treasure in their memories for life. It should be a haven for sleep, study and play and a place they are proud to bring their friends. Makeovers – large or small – just need a bit of inspiration, so let uFurnish.com help you find the pieces you need.
