Winifred Nicholson (1893-1981) was a progressive British painter who developed a personal impressionistic style, concentrating on still life objects and landscapes. She often combined the two subjects, as seen in 'Window-Sill'. She had a lifelong fascination with rainbow and spectrum colours and in the 1970s made particularly strong and innovative use of these in her work.
