This is a large decorative wall hanging made from Devon driftwood, by artist Neil Hampson. This depicts a humpback whale breaching out of the ocean. I collect the driftwood from the beaches of Sidmouth, Devon where I live. I then wash it, & let it dry naturally. The driftwood is glued into place, & I build it up in layers to produce an intricate latticework effect. I give the wood a few coats of spray varnish to protect, & bring out the natural colour of the wood. I then hand-finish it with yacht varnish, to give the wood a rich, glossy appearance. This is signed & dated on the back by the artist, using an engraver. The piece is strung on the back, so ready to hang, & is a stunning addition to any room. Each item I make is unique, & you will receive the piece that is pictured. This is a larger sized work of mine, measuring 106cm ( 41 3/4 in. ) wide, & 39cm ( 15 1/2 in.) high.
