A handmade framed reproduction of William Greatbach's 1842 engraving of occultist & polymath John Dee. John Dee was a renowned English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, & occult philosopher who lived from 1527 to 1609. He is widely regarded as one of the most learned men of his time, & his interests & pursuits spanned a wide range of subjects, including mathematics, astronomy, navigation, cryptography, alchemy, & the occult. Dee is perhaps best known for his work as an astrologer & occult philosopher, & he was a key figure in the development of what is now known as the Enochian system of magic. This system, which Dee claimed was revealed to him by angels through the use of a crystal ball & a series of magical invocations, is based on a complex set of symbols & incantations that were intended to allow practitioners to communicate with higher spiritual beings. in addition to his work in the occult, Dee was also a prolific writer & scholar, & he made important contributions to the fields of mathematics & astronomy. He was a keen observer of the stars & planets, & he made several important astronomical discoveries, including the first recorded observation of a transit of Venus. Despite his many accomplishments, Dee was also a controversial figure, & he was often criticized & marginalized by his peers. He was accused of dabbling in sorcery & witchcraft, & his association with the occult made him a target of suspicion & ridicule. Nevertheless, his legacy as a pioneering scholar & occultist continues to be celebrated to this day. 5x7 canvas in a standing / hanging frame Portrait Of John Dee - William Greatbach, 1842 Handmade Reproduction On Canvas 5x7
