Fern ‘Lady in Red’ lives up to its name, bearing scarlet red stems along with bright green foliage to add a new contrasting colour combination to the popular Japanese Painted Fern. It is a wonderful architectural plant that performs well in shady locations in the garden. ‘Lady in Red’ can be mixed into floral displays to provide a welcome colour break or planted as a standalone focal point. Alternatively, it can be planted as part of a collection with other varieties of fern. This low maintenance, hardy fern bears fresh new fronds each spring, adding shape and contrast to borders and containers that will last well into winter.Ferns should be potted up and grown on in shaded, frost free conditions until they are large enough to be planted up in their final positions outside. When the plants have grown well and there is no longer a risk of frost, you should acclimatise Japanese Painted Ferns to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days before planting them out either in borders or containers. Athyrium ferns prefer soils that are rich in organic matter so add some well-rotted manure or garden compost to the soil before planting.
