Interior with Young Woman Seen from the Back is an oil-on-canvas painting from circa 1903 by the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershi. It uses the muted grey-blue palette, uncluttered composition & detailed attention to the play of light typical of Hammershi's work. Hammershi was born in 1864 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The son of a well-to-do merchant, Christian Hammershi, & his wife, Frederikke, Hammershi studied drawing from the age of eight with Niels Christian Kierkegaard & Holger Grnvold, as well as painting with Vilhelm Kyhn, before embarking on studies with Frederik Vermehren & others at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. From 1883 to 1885, he studied with Peder Severin Kryer at the Independent Study Schools, then debuted in the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1885 with Portrait of a Young Girl.
