The chemical used is strong enough to etch the glass, but is then neutralized with baking soda. The effect is completely permanent & cannot wash or be worn off. I recommend hand washing, mostly just because of the tall, narrow shape of the pieces. I would love to say that this bottle had been saved from the landfill, but in our area it would probably have been recycled into other glass items.
