Mama & Her Chicks - What brought about this imagery were several tall (8-feet or more in summer) Bird-of-Paradise flowering bushes out back of our rental. They have the distinct, almost exact profile shape at certain angles of Great Blue Herons that hung around the Floridian piers I was often around years back. That near mirror likeness between animal & plant took hold & off I went painting the communion of both. First a complex dappled purple/white/blue/magenta background made using small pieces of coral sponge. Soon after rough, wet sketching the three foreground images onto canvas, they began to take on distinct personalities. The more details added, the more they became Themselves. Close up applying the multiple interplay of vivid colors they became gorgeous beings. I cannot recall any time that I've looked on this painting that I've not smiled with a warmth feeling for them.
