These beautiful stylised butterflies are handmade from fine white porcelain. After firing the top half of the butterflies are gilded in 3 different shades of gold using a gilding wax. The bottom half I have left unglazed so it is the natural white porcelain. The edges of the wings top & bottom I have added a slight curl, so emphasis the 3d nature of the piece, & they hang with the top part further from the wall than the bottom, so you get nice interesting shadows over the course of the day. I have put a ceramic little wedge with a hole on the back with silver rings going through it so it hangs from a simple pin in the wall. The pattern on the wings is made by rolling lace into the wet clay. These butterflies are inspired by origami. I like making traditional origami shapes in porcelain, & I started by making butterflies like that. But I felt the shape could be improved as wall art so developed these from that basic idea.
