Trereife Spalted Sycamore Wooden Vase I have been incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to work with this unique wood from a local Woodland at Trereife House near Newlyn, Cornwall. The tree fell down in a storm many years ago & has been lying on the woodland floor slowly going through an amazing transformation. Over the years, fungus has been able to thrive in just the right conditions to create the most amazing & unique colours & patterns in the wood but its not until the final stages of finishing that they are truly revealed. Every time I work with this wood it surprises me & i never get bored of the intricacy of the detailed patterns & colour changed that have been left on the wood by the years of exposure to the Cornish atmosphere! The Spalting in this vase is stunning - the black lines formed when the fungus was active in the wood are so detailed & defined that it looks as if they have been drawn onto the wood with a fine pen! Coupled with the contrasting colours & the beautiful grain that sycamore is known for, it makes a beautiful piece, perfect for complimenting & showing off either a single flower or several. There is a plastic insert inside allowing water to keep flowers fresh.
