An elegant, understated organic artwork, this natural wood centerpiece...or wall hanging... is the result of my interest in wabi sabi, a Zen philosophy based the appreciation of the old & imperfect...a celebration of impermanence found in natural objects. Ideally, the artist's input is minimal, serving more as a presenter of the object rather than the creator. When I find a weather-worn stump, branch or section from a tree, I let it sit in my studio for a while. I view from differing angles & ponder its repurposing. Is it a bowl or a candle holder or a wall hanging with no function other than its intrinsic natural beauty? Truly one of a kind...each piece I create is carefully cleaned & brushed to remove dirt & the soft wood & then lightly sanded. A process that takes many hours & requires deliberate concentration as the wood reveals itself. The bottom is sanded flat to sit nicely on your table. The wood is fed with a blend of oils & allowed to sit as it absorbs the oils. I then hand wax the piece two times, buffing...vigorously!...to bring out the much-prized luster that only hand finished wood can reveal. Overall size is 29 x 9 x 4. This cedar piece has a fabulous texture & wood grain & the patina created by oiling & waxing is outstanding!
