Fabric wall hanging framing a silver/black tree accented by a good luck pomegranate ornament. Throughout history the pomegranate has been a symbol of good luck, eternal life, fertility & abundance. The ancient Greeks believed the tree was planted by Aphrodite (Venus), the goddess of love & beauty. & today the pomegranate continues to have symbolic significance for Greeks. On New Year's Eve it's traditional to break a pomegranate on the ground to ensure good luck & prosperity in the coming year. Guests often bring pomegranates to a new house to wish the owner abundance & good luck. & pomegranates are often broken at weddings to ensure fertility & happiness to the bride & groom. So, having in mind the ricness of the pomegranate's history, I wanted to incorporate this lovely fruit into my wall hangings. As children we would cut out & paste various paper shapes to create different designs. The great artist, Matisse, in his later years, created his exquisite paper cutout masterpieces. I use a similar method to make my wall hangings. Pieces of fabric are first carefully cut out, then joined to other pieces & finally machine sewn to create my various designs. The wall hangings have between 10-25 cutouts & include various symbols of good luck & harmony, for example circles, coins, eye-like features, and, of course, the lovely pomegranate. Only high quality fabrics are used & all wall hangings are fully lined with a sleeve in back to support a rod for hanging.
