Self Sufficiency

Self Sufficiency is about how my grandmother grew up before the Great Depression. They had very little money & raised all their food & kept cows, chickens & hogs for meat, milk & eggs. They canned food & made do with what they had. They never really felt much of the effects of the Depression because they already produced most of what they needed on their own farm. This landscape is a cornfield under a mostly cloudy sky but there is a ray of sunshine beaming down in one spot. The ray of light through dark clouds reflects the ray of hope of self-reliance in a dark economic time. There is a milk pail, calf weaner, & sealing wax used for canning food. The family made most of their own clothes & repaired them as well - replacing buttons & repairing fabric to make them last longer. The box is handmade & the painting is oil on birch panel.
