In the heart of Place Vendme stands one of the most dramatic monuments of the Napoleonic era. The Colonne Vendme was commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806 to commemorate his decisive victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, modelled directly on Trajan's Column in Rome & clad in a continuous spiral bronze frieze cast from the melted cannons of the defeated enemy. Over two hundred individual battle scenes wind their way from base to summit, recording the campaign in extraordinary relief detail, a permanent record of military triumph cast in the bronze of conquest. The column's history is as turbulent as the era it commemorates. After Napoleon's abdication in 1814 the crowning statue was removed & replaced under successive regimes. in 1871 during the Paris Commune the entire column was pulled down as a protest against imperialism, only to be rebuilt under the Third Republic. Today it still dominates Place Vendme, crowned with a statue of Napoleon in military uniform, a monument that has survived revolution, restoration & the full sweep of modern French history.
