Vania Setti uses slabs of clay plus iPods & electronic components to make art. Slabs are great because I can use iPods & their parts as stamps on wet clay to create exquisite textures. Or I can melt the parts onto bisqued slabs to create new colors, textures, & shapes - I feel like a child playing with fire, & it is sustainable. Concerned about the impact dead electronics have in the environment Vania Setti decided to give a better destination to dead iPods & parts. I am using them as artistic elements in ceramic pieces. Most of the work is related to music, her main interest now. Memorable LP or CD covers & pictures of artists have served as sources of inspiration. Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Jimmi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, & John Lennon are among her favorite musicians whose profiles were incorporated into the work. Experimenting with iPods parts & other materials, Setti fired the stoneware slabs at temperatures as high as 2,300 Fahrenheit. Setti wants to reveal the inner aspect of iPods that are hiding inside their impenetrable cases. iPods do not have souls, but people can create such an intimate bond with them. Why not give their short life an extension & a better tomb than the landfill?, asks Vania. For her, melting iPods onto clay is more than cremating them for their ashes. The idea is to bring them back to life in a new form - just like the mythological Phoenix cycle, she ponders.
