Portal Circle is a one-of-a-kind abstract walnut wood sculpture, hand-carved from a single solid piece of wood an organic circular form with an open center. I carved it intuitively, without a sketch, letting the walnut lead me through narrowing passages & widening turns. The circle did not arrive as a symmetry. It arrived as completion that precise moment when a form finally closes & becomes present. I don't carve wood. I carve what I feel & the wood responds. The opening in the center works like a quiet frame not emptiness, but space you can look througha pause held inside the object. Multiple smaller openings pierce the body of the form, creating a sequence of passages that catch & release light as you move around the sculpture. Concave & convex surfaces shift constantly the grain appears & disappears, the portal seems to tighten or soften depending on the angle. From the front, it reads as a circle. From the side, it almost disappears. From any angle between, it becomes something else entirely. Imperfect in shape, finished to a smooth, precise surface intentional, tactile, & calm. This is a piece meant to be experienced in motion, not only seen from one side. Presence in space Portal Circle works as a vertical statement piece its 57 cm total height & 44 cm span give it the presence of a large sculptural work without occupying floor space. Place it on a console, sideboard, or dedicated pedestal where it can be seen from multiple angles.
