The bird statue is made of mixed resin & talc, using a handmade silicone full mold. It was painted by hand with high quality artistic acrylic paints & fine tip paint brushes. The creation of this superb bird statue is a complex process that consists of five stages, namely: 1. modelling the bird in Plasticine (a brand of modelling clay made from calcium salts, petroleum jelly & aliphatic acids) 2. making a silicone full mold 3. hand casting in mixed resin & talc 4. tooling & polishing 5. painting by hand with acrylic paints. The Hawfinch breeds across Europe, North Africa & temperate Asia & has also been sighted in Alaska. THe hawfinch has very close relatives in North & Central America. It typically inhabits deciduous & mixed forests. The white wing bars & tail tip are striking in flight. The hawfinch is a shy species, & therefore difficult to observe & study. It spends most of the day on top of high branches. While drinking & eating it is fairly aggressive & dominant, towards both its same species or different ones, even bigger birds. Hawfinches are monogamous with a pair-bond that sometimes persists from one year to the next. They engage in an elaborate series of courtship routines. The two birds stand apart facing one another & reach out to touch their bills. The male displays to the female by standing erect, puffing out the feathers on his head, neck & chest & allowing his wings to droop forward. He then makes a deep bow. The male will also lower a wing & moves it in a semi-circular arc revealing his wing bars & modified wing feathers. Its flight is fast & its trajectory is straight over short distances. During long flights periodical undulations can be observed in their flight pattern. They are observed to catch insects mid-flight & can fly up to a height of 200 m either in groups or alone.
