This twist action pen is handcrafted out of Redheart. Redheart is one of our shop's favorite woods to work with because of its workability & intense yet natural red color. This pen brings out the natural variation of hue & grain prevalent in Redheart. This pen is great for gifts for a friend or family member, or for you own desk. The Myers Turning woodworking shop consists of 4 artists located in River Falls, Wisconsin. We are self taught wood turners who enjoy the challenges that each project presents. At Myers Turning we take great pride in every pen, pencil, & bowl that we turn. For us, the creative process begins by choosing a combination of wood & hardware & then carefully turning the pen to exact specifications while also bringing out the natural variation of every blank of wood/acrylic we use. No two of our creations are alike & every one is a result of meticulous work & dedication. Turning pens the Myers way At Myers Turning we take great pride in each of our hand crafted pens. For us each pen is an opportunity to create something truly unique that we are sure our customers will enjoy for a lifetime. The first step for us in the process of creating a pen is selecting a wood & hardware combination. To do this we examine many different wood grains & then proceed to meticulously lay out a design for each pen. After the plan has been developed we prepare the wood for turning. To do this we cut the desired wood into two equal lengths & vertically drill a hole down the center of the blank. We then insert a metal tube into each of the two sections. This serves to support the pen while being turned on our lathe. After the prep is done our favorite part begins. To turn the pen we place it on the lathe & use various tools & techniques to turn a square chunk of wood into a cylindrical shaped pen body. Once the pen is roughly the shape of the finished product we move on to sanding. Sanding is the most time consuming part of the pen turning process. We start sanding at a very low 100 grit sandpaper & progressively move up to 12,000 grit sandpaper which leaves the wood shiny as glass. At this point we inspect the pen for any spots we missed while sanding & re-sand if necessary. When we are satisfied that our pen is 100% scratch free we buff the pen & apply multiple layers of finish to protect it. After the pen has had adequate time to dry we assemble the two pen bodies. The final step in the process includes a quality control inspection to make sure the pen is in perfect working order before we send the pen to you, our valued customer Turned Pen - Redheart
