It will give a pleasant artistic touch to your home interior. It blends well into a decorative surrounding of a nature education centre or classroom. A perfect gift for a bird-lover, a nature geek or someone who appreciates art, beauty & craftsmanship. It has been made in approximate scale of 1:1, hence it represents a real life size bird figure. However, it is not a pure & simple replica but rather an imitation of the bird serving both artistic & educational purposes. The bird statue is made of mixed resin & talc, using a handmade silicone full mold. It was painted by hand with high quality artistic acrylic paints & fine tip paint brushes. The creation of this superb bird statue is a complex process that consists of five stages, namely: 1. modelling the bird in Plasticine (a brand of modelling clay made from calcium salts, petroleum jelly & aliphatic acids) 2. making a silicone full mold 3. hand casting in mixed resin & talc 4. tooling & polishing 5. painting by hand with acrylic paints. The long-tailed tit or long-tailed bushtit (Aegithalos caudatus), occasionally referred to as the silver-throated tit or silver-throated dasher, is a common bird found throughout Europe & Asia. The genus name Aegithalos was a term used by Aristotle for some European tits, including the long-tailed tit. The long-tailed tit was formally described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae under the binomial name Parus caudatus. The specific epithet caudatus is the Latin word for tailed. The plumage is mainly black & white, with variable amounts of grey & pink. Its appearance has given rise to the nickname the flying lollipop. Vocalisations are a valuable aid to locating & identifying these birds. When in flocks they issue constant contact calls & are often heard before they are seen. They have three main calls, a single high pitched 'pit', a 'triple trill' eez-eez-eez, & a rattling 'schnuur'. The calls become faster & louder when the birds cross open ground or if an individual becomes separated from the group. The long-tailed tit is globally widespread throughout temperate northern Europe & Asia, into boreal Scandinavia & south into the Mediterranean zone. It inhabits deciduous & mixed woodland with a well-developed shrub layer, favouring edge habitats. Outside the breeding season they form compact flocks of 3 to 30 birds, composed of family parties (parents & offspring) from the previous breeding season, together with any extra adults that helped to raise a brood. These flocks will occupy & defend territories against neighbouring flocks. The driving force behind the flocking behaviour is thought to be that of winter roosting, being susceptible to cold; huddling increases survival through cold nights.
