"Sculpture Turned Wood, ""Throwing Stones"

A truly unique piece of art! This piece was inspired by an afternoon that I spent some time throwing rocks into a pond near my house. The idea sat with me for quite some time while I worked out the logistical & structural challenges of turning my concept into reality. There were several proto-types that I made (and must admit were less than stellar accomplishments). Then, late one night, a solution came to me. This is made out of Walnut. It is several pieces that were each turned on multiple axis's on the lathe, then segmented & reassembled to generate the varied ripple effect that you see. It was sculpted entirely by myself on the wood lathe. I have four basic goals that I strive to achieve with my work: Design & create pieces that complement the wood. Explore the concept of creating a sense of movement with an inanimate object. Design pieces in such a way as to visually stretch portions of the piece to appear either larger, smaller or a different shape that it actually is. (This applies primarily to my sculptural work & my wall hangings.) Be as ecologically responsible as possible with my woodwork. I use as much salvage as possible & much of my other material is grown specifically for commercial purposes. It is 20 tall, 28 1/2 wide & 1 thick. It is pre-hung with eye hooks & wire on the back.
