Dimensions: 38 cm long x 20 cm wide Materials: locally sourced sheep's wools & organic dyes Technique: Backstrap loom Producers: Community of Amaru Fairly traded Awanas, or backstrap looms, demonstrate both the complexity & the simplicity of traditional weaving. Each awana is composed of an unfinished narrow textile, the remaining unwoven threads, knotted at one end, & the small bundle of yarn used to weave the textile. The two sets of threads are highlighted by three flat shed sticks that separate them in alternating fashion. These products were hand-woven in the community of Amaru using 100% natural & organic local sheep wool, & dyed using natural plants & other pigments. All of our products are fairly traded, which means the indigenous women weavers that make these products are paid a fair price for their work & expertise. All additional proceeds from sales are reinvested into the community through a Community Development Fund & a youth scholarship program.
