"Wood Sculpture ""Sun"

This sculpture was inspired by Isamu Noguchi's Black Sun. I highlighted the raw beauty of the avocado tree trunk by carving out the center to give the viewer a glimpse of nature's beauty behind the scenes. The outside rim was left in its raw state to allow the tree to express the shapes that Nouguchi so lovingly carved. The piece sits on a sleek black granite base paying homage to Noguchi's medium. The outside rim was left in its raw state to allow the tree to express the shapes that Nouguchi so lovingly carved. The piece sits on a sleek black granite base paying homage to Noguchi's medium. I carved out a circle in the middle of this raw avocado trunk & sculpted the body into another circle. I left the natural shapes on the front & back to give it interest.
