The characteristic rust layer forms within a few days or weeks, depending on weathering. Corten steel forms a particularly dense barrier layer of firmly adhering sulfates or phosphates on the component surface (e.g. through weathering or deliberate etching, e.g. with citric or acetic acid) beneath the actual rust layer, which protects the component from further corrosion & thus ensures a weatherproof, insensitive & long-lasting surface. Due to these properties, Corten steel is ideal for outdoor use or as a material for outdoor furniture. During use (in the first few weeks), care should be taken to ensure that rust-caused water can permanently stain the surface.
