Black Essence is a hand-carved apple wood sculpture shaped by fire & intuition a vertical form where light cuts through darkness. Three organic openings pierce the body, allowing light to pass through & shift throughout the day. There is no single front the sculpture changes with perspective. I carved this piece without sketches, guided by the grain, resistance, & direction of the wood. Only when the form was complete did fire enter the process. Using a controlled yakisugi burn, the surface deepened into a velvety black, revealing texture & natural cracks that no tool could create. I don't carve wood. I carve what I feel & the wood responds. Presence in space This sculpture builds its presence quietly. Its dark surface absorbs light, while the openings release it back into the space in subtle, shifting patterns. It works naturally in minimalist, Japandi, & wabi-sabi interiors or as a single, grounded form in a more expressive setting.
